Knock-Knock. Who’s There? LG’s New InstaView Oven with Air Fryer Now Available

I don’t want my current refrigerator to break, but if it should happen to accidentally fall out of a second story window, I know what I’ll replace it with: The LG InstaView fridge. The InstaView fridge comes equipped with knock-on technology that lets you see what’s inside by knocking on its surface, without ever having to open the door.

Now it looks like my current oven may become another victim of a precipitous and totally accidental defenestration. LG announced yesterday that its new InstaView Ranges with Air Fry, also outfitted with the knock-on technology, are now available for purchase nationwide.

LG said in this week’s announcement that it’s sold more than 1 million units of its InstaView fridges, and now we’ll see if the ovens prove equally popular. Like the fridge, the new LG oven lets you peek inside simply by knocking twice on the glass. From the press announcement:

Simply knock twice on the oven’s glass window to illuminate the interior and visually monitor cooking progress. And if you’re hands are full or dirty, the range will light up if gently tapped twice with an elbow, knee or even foot.

Aside from the “neat-o” factor of the InstaView, there is a practical application. Being able to check on your dinner without opening up the door means all the heat stays inside the oven and doesn’t escape. And sure, just about every oven comes with a light switch to do the same thing, but come on! This is so much more fun.

In addition to the knock-knock, the new LG ranges also come with the popular Air Fry option, so you can brown and crisp food without the need for a separate countertop device.

There are also a number of smart features such as remote monitoring and control of the oven via the LG ThinQ mobile app, as well as recipe and guided cooking functionality via SideChef, Innit, and Tovala integrations.

The LG InstaView ovens can be purchased now and cost between $899 and $1,299 depending on the make and model.

Smart Kitchen Appliances: What If “Smart” Means Superior Instead Of Connected?

One of the core discussions around the smart kitchen at SKS over the past three years has been the function and usability of smart devices in the kitchen. What devices will actually help us cook better food more easily and what are just silly attempts at connectivity for connectivity’s sake?

Breville has a different take on what makes an appliance smart, and it goes well beyond the ability to connect to its devices via a smart app. The new Breville Smart Oven Air has unique technology that allows for incredibly precise temperature control and can actually change how the heat is distributed. In other words, depending on the requirements of the specific dish you’re cooking, you can make the oven hotter at the front, top, bottom, or back of the chamber.

Allen Weiner of The Spoon sat down with Scott Brady, General Manager of Global Marketing at Breville at the 2017 Smart Kitchen Summit to talk about how Breville’s smart oven makes life easier in the kitchen. According to Brady, “this precise heat distribution lets you complete a lot of simple cooking tasks a lot better.”

For example, if you’re baking a cake, you’ll want the heat focused on the bottom of the oven to prevent it from cracking; whereas, for a pizza, you’ll want the heat evenly distributed throughout. Both are possibilities with the Breville oven, so that you can get the perfect finish no matter what you’re cooking. And the guesswork of how to heat and at what temperature isn’t left up to the user – the oven will course correct and heat to perfection no matter what the dish.

Another trend in kitchen appliances seems to be more all-in-one functionality. The future kitchen will likely not have a slow cooker, an oven, a toaster, a microwave and a sous vide machine but rather one or two devices that does most of that with ease. Breville is trying to pull that off with the Smart Oven Air. For one, it’s bringing in air-frying, which is a much healthier way to prepare your favorite fried foods. Instead of using hot oil, the oven uses fast-moving convection heat to mimic the effect of a traditional deep-fryer. Precise temperature control and regulated air movement mean that this oven can also dehydrate fruit, as well as act as a slow-cooker.

The question is: The Breville oven may be smart, but where does the company stand on connectivity?

For Breville, Brady says, “We don’t want to be connected for connected’s sake.” Instead, their goal is to create products that offer unique, new technology that’s truly helpful—not cumbersome. The future of smart kitchen devices is creative technology that actually makes culinary tasks easier for the user when combined with the convenience of an app, a built-in recipe database and intelligence baked into the device itself.

Brady says Breville is working on products that meet this promise, and you can expect them in 2018.

Making Traditional Food Prep Smarter With Vitamix

Vitamix is a household name is the kitchen; in 1949, founder William G. Barnard demonstrated the Vitamix blender in the first U.S. infomercial in the early days of television. Since then, Vitamix has worked to uphold William’s mission, developing kitchen food preparation tools as technology continues to mature and provide new capabilities. As COO, much of Tony Ciepiel’s work is thinking about how the market is evolving and how Vitamix can lead in bringing new technology to traditional kitchen prep devices like the Vitamix Ascent Series.

The company’s smart blender series builds on the traditional Vitamix blender and adds emerging technology and capabilities such as built-in timers and wireless connectivity. “As we began designing and planning for the launch of the Ascent Series, we asked ourselves how we might add value for our customers through intuitive design and maximum ease of use,” said Ciepiel. “Among other things, that line of thought drove us to incorporate Near Field Communication (NFC) technology into the containers for our Ascent Series blenders.”

Through NFC, the blender can detect what size container has been placed onto the base and will change blending program parameters accordingly. Those parameters include ramp-up times and blade speeds as well as the overall length of a blending program. “That was really a breakthrough moment that brought us to the forefront of intelligent technology within the blending space. We intend to remain there.”

In addition to the Ascent Series product, Vitamix has plans to launch an app that gives customers control over their blenders and what they can make. The app includes the ability to design blending programs that can then be uploaded to the blender to provide users the ability to customize programs to meet their needs. The app pairs those programs with recipes that go directly to the blender. Vitamix allows users to access those recipes but also works with their Perfect Blend Smart Scale, to let the user know exactly – down to a fraction of an ounce – how much of each ingredient to load into the blender container, and can scale the recipe to desired volume or calorie count.

“When you combine that level of automation, product intelligence and connectivity, you impart the expertise of professional chefs to the novice user, which in turn creates unparalleled joy of use and a real feeling of accomplishment,” said Ciepiel of the app.

But how are consumers reacting to this kind of technology? Tony sees it as both an opportunity and a challenge. “One of the interesting challenges we face as an industry is giving consumers a compelling reason to invest their time and money into learning how to integrate “Internet of Things” features into their daily lives,” said Ciepiel. “We’re in a unique position to evolve a product that people already love for its convenience and reliability…. we need to help our customers understand why we’re integrating new, connected technology into our products, and why it’s more than worth their time to come along for the journey.”

Vitamix recognizes that a unique approach is needed when addressing the future of kitchen technology and communicating its benefits. Through in-depth research, they’ve been able to gain a better grasp on the voice of their customer and from that research, are working to develop products that can be woven seamlessly into customers lives.

“It’s not just creating technology for the sake of technology, but rather creating products that directly fulfill what customers want and help them achieve their personal goals, whatever those may be. This will inevitably include more connected, high-tech products in the kitchen as time goes by,” Ciepiel acknowledged. “The industry needs to create and agree upon technical communication standards sooner rather than later.”

What Happened To Smart Fridges In 2016?

As we continue our end of year wrap-up series, we wanted to drive into some smart kitchen appliance categories to see what happened (or didn’t happen) to the category as a whole and make some predictions for what’s on the horizon for 2017.

Hey Alexa, what’s in my fridge?

If there was a darling of connected tech in 2016, the Amazon Echo was it. Voice control was barely a whisper at CES last year and by September, if you didn’t have voice control baked into your smart home or entertainment device (or at least have it on your product roadmap), you were irrelevant. And Alexa fit right into the kitchen, with hands-free control in the one room if the house you don’t want to be touching your smartphone.

Voice control makes more sense for devices that do stuff – telling Alexa to pre-heat the oven is a pretty useful skill. So, the Amazon Echo compatibility for fridges is a shorter list, but worth a look:

  • GE – GE launched their Geneva skill to control a range of GE Wi-Fi appliances, including fridges but also ovens and washing machines. For fridges, Alexa can control the temperature, turn the icemaker on or off, prep hot water for coffee or tea, or just give you a status on how the fridge is doing.
  • The Samsung Family Hub connects to Amazon Echo and you can use Alexa to control all the things on the Hub’s OS like Pandora but you can also order groceries through the Groceries by Mastercard app, mirroring Amazon’s own ordering services available through voice.

The fridge as the home hub

The concept of the connected fridge isn’t a new one, with appliance makers adding Wi-Fi connectivity to their products for the last several years. One of the companies on the early smart fridge bandwagon was Samsung, who began talking about an internet refrigerator back in 2001. Later during that decade, Samsung was demoing smart fridges at CES; the fridge displayed a small-ish touch screen with basic connected functionality.

Then came the Samsung Family Hub. A beast of a machine (in both size and price), this fridge first debuted last year at CES 2016 with its official launch in May. With its giant 1080p touchscreen on the front, it looked at first glance, like a version of their other Wi-Fi connected fridges on steroids. But the Family Hub actually packs some interesting features that while might seem frivolous at the outset, actually hint at some larger tech trends for fridges and other appliances in the future.

The giant touchscreen features interesting apps like the Groceries by Mastercard app which allows you to order food from FreshDirect and ShopRite, right from your fridge. The fridge also gives users the ability to photo tag their items to keep track of what’s there.

The other future-facing features are the cameras placed in the fridge’s doors to let you see what’s inside when the doors are closed. Why would we want to do that? Well to check when you’re at the grocery store to see what you’re out of, for one. You can also look inside the fridge from the touchscreen on the front, negating the need to open the doors. LG debuted similar functionality at CES 2016, with theirs using a “knocking” feature and a clear window on the front of the fridge to let someone knock, illuminate the interior lights and see what’s in the fridge without opening the door.

But ordering groceries from your fridge’s touchscreen and being able to see what’s inside from your phone in a supermarket isn’t really the compelling story here. The story is what Samsung (and others) haven’t yet put inside this device – and what will make refrigerators way smarter in the future.

The fridge as a part of the kitchen’s OS ecosystem

Moving from connectivity and entertainment to a true smart appliance, the fridge of the future might actually have a database of knowledge and machine learning behind it that will allow it to know things about your food. Startups like Innit are pioneering a new category using food data along with image recognition software to allow an appliance like a refrigerator to recognize food without any user inputs and generate useful information from that. Information like a recipe that could be made with the contents left in the fridge on the day before shopping day would help prevent food waste and also give users helpful ideas for dinner.

The technology concept driving Innit is what’s missing from the Samsung Family Hub and every other Wi-Fi connected fridge. Cameras and connectivity are great, but when something requires the user to constantly input and maintain a database in order to fully deliver on its usefulness, it falls apart. Consumers don’t want another thing to have to update, they want tech that makes things easier.

Innit’s partnership with appliance giant Whirlpool is proof that manufacturers are recognizing the shortcomings of current technology. And the opportunity in the kitchen isn’t going unnoticed; Microsoft announced in a blog post in early September it too is planning to build a fridge with a connected, machine learning based platform. Microsoft will collaborate with Liebherr’s appliance division to create a platform that uses computer-based deep learning algorithms with imaging software to recognize food that’s placed inside a refrigerator.

Unique to Microsoft is the modularity they’re building into every “SmartDevice ready” appliance, theoretically making any refrigerator purchased today easily upgradable in the future. Products like the Samsung Family Hub fridge have been criticized for offering a host of features without any clear answers on how the device will keep pace with future innovation and developments. With the price tags on connected appliances still one to three times what consumers pay for their dumb counterparts, future-proofing these products seems critical to their long-term success. This coupled with the longer buying cycles of white goods mean appliance manufacturers might start thinking about their revenue streams and what kind of role that plays, whether that’s through a grocery replenishment partnership or technology upgrades that offer new functionality.

Appliance-As-A-Service (AAAS….?) 

Mike Wolf wrote a post here at The Spoon and an even larger analysis at the NextMarket blog on the concept of paying monthly fees to obtain a consumer good, or what’s known as the “X as a service” model. Much of the consumer market is trending towards a service or subscription model, from streaming videos to clothing and furniture. Could kitchen appliances follow suit?

Bad acronym aside, it’s not completely crazy. We’re finally seeing appliances evolve to provide significant value beyond the existing reactive position they’ve held in the kitchen for the last fifty or sixty years. There’s machine learning and artificial intelligence set to change how we cook and how tasty and well-prepared the food we sit down to eat will be along with connectivity giving us capabilities and efficiencies that might make us want to cook more with more convenience. But the current trajectory requires consumers to piece together a smart kitchen and then also keep tabs on upgrades and seek out tech support for issues they encounter. What if appliances like smart fridges could be purchased as a service, with upgrades and support and maybe other services baked in?

Though we haven’t seen any company make a serious move towards AAAS just yet, we think it’s an area to watch in 2017 and beyond. If for no other reason than it’s actually a pretty awesome acronym.

With CES 2017 just a week away, we’re sure to see more developments in the smart fridge and more broadly, smart kitchen appliance category.

Electrolux Ideas Lab Picks Smart Watch With Food Data And Augmented Reality Baked In

It isn’t uncommon these days for large, legacy brands in the food and appliance space to dive into the startup game. We’ve seen companies like Campbell’s, Kellog and General Mills create investment arms to back food startups looking to disrupt the market; startups in the space have raised over $6 billion over the past several years with products designed to shape the future of food.

Appliance giants like Electrolux are on the prowl for the next big idea that might revolutionize food production and manufacturing but also cooking, eating and buying food from the consumer end. Earlier this year, Electrolux launched the Electrolux Ideas Lab, a competition designed to find the next big idea in food innovation. According to Electrolux,

The premise of the Ideas Lab Is to “inspire people around the world to enjoy tastier, healthier and more sustainable home cooking in the future.”

Opened to everyone from students to startups, the Ideas Lab is a crowdsourced play to bring fresh thinking to Electrolux’s own products and solutions in the market. After picking 50 finalists, the company opened voting to the public and last week announced the top 10 vote-getters, along with the grand prize winner.

WatchYourself, Ideas Lab’s first-ever winner, is a smart watch concept designed by an Estonian product design student. The watch itself looks more like a high-tech bracelet but has unique features that allow you to scan in grocery items while you’re at the store to see if it fits into your personal diet and health plan. This requires some programming upfront and inputs from the user about who they are, what they’re allergic to, what they’d like to eat and their personal health goals. But the watch goes beyond just food data delivery, it also projects recipes for food items into the palm of your hand.

This concept – combining food data and recipe suggestions – isn’t new, but the delivery method is unique. Fitness wearables have dominated the market for a while now, but the combination of food data, nutrition, and digital health is where the market seems to be moving. We’ve seen startups like Habit launch, complete with a DNA kit to develop a truly personalized nutrition system for your own body’s needs. The WatchYourself concept combines the wearable technology form factor with deeper personalization for health and wellness – along with a tiny projector allowing recipes to actually be shown in your palm. The winner receives a week in Stockholm, home to Electrolux headquarters and a startup scene that helped birth the likes of Spotify and Skype – not to mention 10,000 euros.

Consumers are shifting their purchases and preferences to find ways to eat and live healthier and legacy food, tech and housewares brands are looking for ways to capitalize. With over $6 billion in investment, startups in the space are just getting started.

June Ships Smart Oven To Early Backers

If you were at the 2016 Smart Kitchen Summit, you probably noticed a huge growth of smart kitchen startups in the space. From creating brand new smart appliances to printing 3D food to growing food inside your own kitchen, there are no shortages of companies trying to come up with the new big thing in kitchen tech. A few of those startups have made big waves in recent years, including smart oven maker June. The June Oven, which includes a unique heating architecture, HD camera and a built-in food thermometer, promises to take literally all the work out of cooking your food. It’s got built-in Wi-Fi and an app that lets you control, monitor and even see your food as it cooks. And after a half-year delay, the company announced it has begun shipping the $1500 appliance to its early backers.

June’s co-founders Matt Van Horn and Nikhil Bhogal debuted the oven in mid-2015 after leaving startup Path (both had solid resumes, including stints at startup that became Lyft and Apple). They were pretty secretive about what they were up to, and when they came out to debut their new concept for cooking, there was some skepticism. But they quickly pointed out that kitchen innovation had been stale – Van Horn commenting, “there hasn’t been any real innovation in the kitchen since the 70s with the introduction of the microwave oven.” And maybe he was right – looking around the kitchen today, we see products that might look sleeker, but basically function the same today as they did 30 or more years ago.

But what does the June Oven do that’s so unique – and why does it cost $1500?

June Intelligent Oven

Unlike the majority of other early attempts at smart kitchen devices, June’s Intelligent Oven goes beyond connectivity and app control and puts a heavy focus on artificial intelligence (AI) to help consumers cook food. Powered by a quad-core NVIDIA processor, the oven’s Food ID technology uses an internal HD camera and AI software to identify the food and recommend multi-step cook programs.  Once programmed, the June oven kicks into guided cooking mode, monitoring and shifting cook modes based on internal temperature readings from the oven’s internal thermometer. The oven can currently recognize 25 food types and the company expects that to continue to grow.

And while some balked at the hefty price tag for what looks like a countertop toaster oven, investors have flocked to the company, helping June raise a Series A round of $22.5 million in early 2016. In many ways, June is attempting to replace more than just your dumb oven sitting against the wall. It’s trying to replace your microwave, toaster oven and even your cookbook.

Initially targeted to ship in spring, the company said the delay was due to updates to the heating mechanisms and materials. The delays may have been worth it, as early reviews of the product seem positive, important in a market that is likely to become much more crowded in the coming year. For now, however, June is the first truly AI-powered smart oven available to consumers.
