Podcast: Tipping Cows With Crowd Cow’s Ethan Lowry

Here’s one thing you probably haven’t tried: crowdfunding a cow.

But now you can with Seattle area startup Crowd Cow. The brainchild of former Urban Spoon cofounder Ethan Lowry, Crowd Cow lets backers buy their choice of meat by crowdfunding local farm raised cattle one cow at a time.

In this episode, I talk to Ethan about how he got the idea for Crowd Cow, how he sees the retail market for meat changing and how Crowd Cow could evolve to become a platform for products other than beef.

PancakeBots To Cold Brew: Exploring Kitchen Innovation With StoreBound’s Evan Dash (Podcast)

After spending the first part of his career as a retail executive, Evan Dash decided he wanted to be an entrepreneur and help bring innovative new products to the same store shelves he felt lacked new and interesting ideas. That’s exactly what he’s done with StoreBound, Dash’s product innovation company that discovered the PancakeBot and is working on bringing a cold brew coffee maker for the home to market this year.

I caught up with Evan to talk about finding the next big thing in the home appliance space, get his thoughts on what is working – and not working – in retail today, and what areas of innovation get him particularly excited.

Podcast: Here Come The Robots

Is it time to get robot insurance? It just might be.

One of my predictions for the smart home in 2017 was that robots would become an ever more important part of the smart home. While we aren’t quite upon the era of fully independent humanoid robots, there is no doubt we are beginning to many more mass-market consumer robots in the form of vacuums, lawn mowers, drink makers and more.

In this podcast I talk to iRobot’s head VP of technology Chris Jones about the current state of consumer robotics, how he sees robots becoming an important part of the smart home, and where he sees things going over the next few years.

Podcast: Is Flavor a Technology?

In this podcast, I talk with Mikel Cirkus and Matthew Walter from Firmenich, the world’s largest privately owned flavor company, about the idea of flavor as a technology.

We explore how flavor can be broken down into different elements, how the speed of innovation and discovery in flavors continues to accelerate across geographies in today’s connected world, what it’s like to be a flavor trend scout (hint: awesome) and how the connected kitchen is impacting the flavor industry.

Podcast: Listen In On Mike’s Amazon Smart Home Consultation

A week and a half ago, The Spoon broke the story about Amazon’s new smart home consultations.

That’s right, Amazon is sending their own employees into consumer homes in seven west coast cities and giving free smart home consultations to help them figure out how to best build a smart home that fits their needs.

Since Seattle is one of the test market for Amazon’s smart home consultations, I decided to have one of their consultants pay me a visit. Not only that, I decided to record it.

Have a listen.

Podcast: The Thermomix Interview

If you live in the US, chances are you haven’t gotten your hands on a Thermomix TM5. That’s because the latest generation of Vorwerk’s hugely popular multi cooker that has sold over 3 million units in Europe has only been available in the state of California as part of a limited test market rollout.

But that’s all about to change. Thermomix’s parent company Vorwerk plans to expand the product’s US footprint in 2017, first in New York and then to other markets. This expansion comes as the company rolls out its new connected recipe platform, the Cook-Key, which gives Thermomix users access to thousands of recipes that can automatically be downloaded and used as part of multicooker’s guided cooking system.

As CES in Las Vegas I caught up with the head of Thermomix’s North America, Kai Schaeffner, and Stefan Hilgers, who is head of product for the Thermomix.

Podcast: Talking Artificial Intelligence With ArchiTECHt’s Derrick Harris

I caught up recently with my old friend Derrick Harris. We worked together at Gigaom, the once-great tech blog, and now, just as then, Derrick is the go-to guy to learn all the latest in the worlds of big data and cloud computing. Most recently he’s been digging deeper on artificial intelligence, so I thought we would catch up and dive deep into what’s happening in this market.

We get nerdy on this podcast, but we talk about how AI will evolve and how it will impact markets like the smart kitchen and the smart home.
