As a young homebrewer, Daniel Kurzrock wanted to turn his passion for beer brewing into a business. He had started baking bread for his friends using the spent grains from the beer-making process, so he had a rough idea that maybe someday he could open something like a microbrewery-slash-bakery that would both brew beer and make upcycled food.

Kurzrock would eventually start an upcycled food business, only in a much different – and much bigger – way than he originally anticipated.

With one pound of grains for every six-pack of beer brewed, Kurzrock and his cofounder Jordan Schwarz realized that there were billions of pounds left behind or potential inputs for human consumable food. With this realization, soon ReGrained was born.

Almost a decade later, the company is partnering with some of the world’s biggest breweries and making products such as ice cream using a patented upcycling process.

Listen to Daniel and I talk about ReGrained’s journey and the growth of the upcycling industry in this podcast. As always, you can find more Food Tech Show’s at Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
