After Four Years, It Looks I’m Finally Going To Get My Spinn Coffee Maker

Well what do you know? It appears my long, nearly half-decade wait for the Spinn coffee maker is nearing an end.

That’s because I got an email last week letting me know that my Spinn is on its way. For those of you who have been following along, the company first started pitching their centrifugal coffee maker back in 2016. I ordered one early – in the first wave – and waited excitedly for my machine to arrive in 2017.

Only it didn’t, and before long Spinn stopped given expected ship dates. The months soon stretched into years. Backers became restless.

In the meantime, I documented the long and twisting journey of Spinn, from its continued delays to it a new funding round and more.

The company said they started shipping last year, but my research showed they had only really shipped early production models to beta testers, some of whom included the company’s own investors. This shipment appears to be the first one to a broader set of backers.

The company, which had seen a slight setback due to COVID-19 related shutdowns, had teased they had finished production ready for backers in their most recent monthly update:

Since our last update, our colleagues in China have been working very hard on setting up the production line, the pre-assembly, assembly, packaging, and preparing all units of this batch for international shipment. These days, being able to line up a production run is all the more exciting. Our teams across the globe have been hard at work catching up after the shutdowns due to COVID-19.

Despite a four year wait, I’m still pretty excited for my Spinn. I can’t tell you how many emails I received from other backers over the last couple years asking if they should give up and ask for a refund. What I always told them was that despite the long wait, the company’s detailed monthly production updates and news of their funding made it seem the Spinn team was working to get this thing done.

Now they finally have. Once I get it in a few weeks, I’ll have to see if the long wait was worth it.

I’m waiting to see, I almost bought one and didn’t. Exited to see how it works in the real world.

It looks like Spinn will fulfill batch 1 orders by September/October 2020 It seemed like Groundhog day waiting for this machine after nearly 4 years. I almost pulled the plug and asked for my money back several times, but hung in there. Let’s hope it is worth the wait.

Agree, it’s taken a long time. They are slow-rolling the delivery of this first batch. My guess is they are looking to fund production with new sales of hardware and their coffee marketplace. I’ve gotten notification mine is on it’s way, but it’s sure taking a while.

Not yet! I did get an email asking for my address and I responded on June 19th. Your message reminded me and so I’ve emailed them to ask when I can expect to see the machine.

Here’s the response I got from Spinn on July 8, 2020:

        Hi Michael,

        Thanks for reaching out!

We haven’t shared delivery dates yet, we will make sure to notify you of your delivery date towards the end of the month.

        Thank you,
        Spinn Team

I don’t expect to ship anything. I’m a customer. That said, they said ship dates will go out to early customers later this month. However, given Spinn’s constant delays, we’ll see if this actually happens.

It’s interesting that The Spoon is solely the only source of content for Spinn. Even after the “first batch” shipments to Los Angeles back in December, there hasn’t been one video or anything to prove how real this product will actually come to production or shipping to the masses. But I do hope you get some good news on when yours will ship as many of us are interested in seeing reviews for this machine. I couldn’t wait longer and bough a Philips LatteGo and couldn’t be happier.

Well, I bought one in 2016, which is probably why I’ve continued to write about it. That and, at some point, I just became curious what the resolution will be to this device that’s been delayed for over three years.

I ordered one on December 1, 2016. The update page said that my order is in the first batch. I have not received any email to confirm delivery.

It’s weird they are sending notices to some of the first-batch customers, but not others. I suspect I may be early in the list because I write about them.

As I’ve written in the comments elsewhere, they may not have enough funds to do a production run for the entire first batch, which is why they’ve only sent notifications of impending shipment to select first-batch customers.

Bought one at the beginning of Fall in 2016 and live in CA. Received same email as you mid-June but haven’t heard anything since and there isn’t a delivery date listed on my account. Spinn has not replied to my outreach in July inquiring about the delivery date.
I tried posting these facts on the discussion form Spinn operates and my post was not approved. I’ve tried posting more than a dozen times but all my posts have been moderated. I’m concerned the most that they censor my posts when they don’t violate the community policy.

I emailed the founders this week after I too had gotten a bit frustrated after getting an email telling me my Spinn was on its way and seeing a YouTube influencer review the Spinn. They’re claiming they’re held up in customs. Seems a bit of a stretch. They also told me the review unit was a personal unit of the founder’s. See email below:

      “Hi Michael,
Hope all is well with you?
I know Justine personally (she’s practically my neighbor) and she wanted to do a review for a long time. The unit that you see in the video is actually my personal machine.
We’ve been held up because of customs. The huge covid backlog at customs delayed the delivery of the units (coming from China), very frustrating.
I’m sure you’ve seen this with other product companies as well?
I looked into your order and we expect to be able to deliver in the next few weeks.
Thanks for your understanding and patience.
      Roderick

I was in the first batch but was 5 people short of the first cut. I am SO anxious to hear how it is! It’s been way too long, but I wasn’t going to get any money back so I’m waiting.

I really hope it’s at least a good machine.

I’m an early backer as well (December 2016). I received my unit in September. It’s a very impressive piece of machinery and design. I would be 100% over the moon about it, but for the unit’s inability to get the water temperature above 160 degrees F in the cup. It should be at least 190-195 with a brew temperature of 203-205. Spinn tells me they’re working on a firmware update to fix this (they say it’s a pre-heat issue). In the meantime, I have to drink my under-heated, under-brewed coffee quickly before it gets cold. BTW, a reviewer on the Spinn website had a similar issue and they sent him a new machine. Just saying’…

Ok so I am dying to see a full review. Trying to decide if I should hold out hope or throw in the towel and just buy another product. The Spinn just checks all the box’s on my wish list. Assuming the product is real.

I did receive mine but 1. It didn’t include the frother or carafe and that’s the one I ordered and it didn’t hook up to WiFi.. wasted money investing in this.. I demanded a full refund!
