(Ed Note: The original podcast published had an audio glitch. We’ve since fixed in feed and the embedded audio below.)

Joe Ray learned to take ‘clean shots’ from François Simon, the legendary French food critic who was the inspiration for the character Anton Ego in Pixar’s Ratatouille.

Of course, taking a ‘clean shot’ is writing an honest and straightforward review, but more than that, it means backing it all up, especially when the reviewer is putting a critical lens to a product.

That’s exactly what Ray does in his coverage of food and cooking tech for Wired, and it’s why he’s one of my favorite reviewers of kitchen gadgets. I sat down with Joe to talk about air fryers, Alexa, his review of the Mellow and writing for Simon.
