Now You Can Get Unlimited Coffee From Cafes For $11/wk (in Berlin)

Coffee bean subscriptions are all the rage right now, but Bonaverde, originally a coffee roast-grind-brew hardware startup, is taking the hype to a whole new level: a flat rate subscription for cups of coffee brewed in over 100 real-world locations in Berlin.

The team’s newest project, the Urban Coffee Club, offers Berlin coffee lovers unlimited cups of coffee in more than 100 locations in the city for a flat rate of €10 per week.

To learn more about the origins of the Urban Coffee Club (UCC), as well as how it makes sense economically, we reached out to Alex Greif, COO at Bonaverde.

“Like Spotify, we offer unlimited coffee at a flat rate,” Alex said. “But like Airbnb, we don’t own any of the locations that serve the coffee, we just connect them to the service and let consumers choose which one they’d like to go to.”

Here’s how it works: Bonaverde partners with “coffee corners”, which can be cafes, restaurants, yoga studios, bookstores, or anywhere that has existing coffee equipment. Bonaverde sends those corners roasted coffee beans for free—much of it from Bonaverde’s own supply chain, but also from local roasters who offer free beans to the service to get their product in front of consumers.

Each week, Bonaverde selects 5-10 different coffee beans from their own stash and partner roasters, then delivers them to coffee corners across Berlin according to predictive models that anticipate demand. Each location is given one type of coffee bean, and it’s never the same week-to-week. Consumers then have the power to look at the app and choose a coffee corner according to proximity, ratings and reviews, or the bean offering. Coffee corners simply brew the beans and hand it over to the UCC customer.

“In Germany,” Alex continued, “it’s common for businesses to provide some kind of side service that attracts people. Often it’s DHL package drop-off points, but that takes a lot of storage and you have a DHL employee in and out every day. With coffee, it’s totally free, it takes virtually zero extra storage, and coffee corners can have a steady flow of relevant customers stopping by.”

The club’s coffee corners, for the most part, do not run their business on coffee sales, but food. The hopes are that UCC customers will come get their coffee, then stay for a sandwich or treat. And, if their experience is positive, maybe they’ll come back in the future.

It makes sense for the coffee corners who are happy to have additional foot traffic. It makes sense for local roasters who want to get their coffee in front of customers. But does it make sense for Bonaverde? At just €1 per cup of coffee on the Lite plan, do the economics work out?

“The idea is that creating an economy of scale—buying coffee for over 100 locations—brings down the cost and makes it work,” Alex said. 

He also explained that most customers don’t actually drink a cup per day in cafes. Many of them have a cup at home or at work. Paying €10 per week for unlimited coffee, for many people, is less about the certainty of getting coffee at a great price, but the ease and availability of the cafe experience.

The Urban Coffee Club has only been live for just over one week, but there are already over 200 paying members. Alex will soon have promoters on the streets telling people about the club, and he’s eagerly signing on new coffee corners in different neighborhoods of the city.

Alex has his sights set beyond Berlin for 2020: “We want to prove it here, then build it into a platform solution where we can basically add in the roasters, add in the corners, add in the users, and then take it to any city in the world and replicate it.”

The Urban Coffee Club has a way to go before it’s ready to dominate Europe’s coffee market. For one, the signup experience in the app has been so problem-ridden that at a pop-up UCC booth, they had to full-on embrace how bad it was with a display that humorously said “Home of the *worst* signup experience”. Bonaverde’s also looking for investor partners to give them the capital they need to continue growing. And with only a week in the books and zero precedent for this kind of business model with coffee, it’s still unclear how the model will fare long-term.

But after having created the Urban Coffee Club completely from scratch—from raw idea to 100 coffee corners—in just six weeks, who knows? Maybe it won’t be long before we’re all paying a flat rate for coffee after all.

The Spoon Video Review Of The Bonaverde Berlin Roast-Grind-Brew Coffee Machine

Coffee is a drink people take seriously, and go to great lengths in order to achieve the perfect cup. Bonaverde, the Kickstarter phenom that took its sweet time coming to market, is betting that freshness will be its key to success.

While many coffee devices out there will give you exact control over water temperature, or grind size, Bonaverde’s pitch is that you need to take it back to the bean. A raw, green coffee bean, to be more precise. The Berlin is an all-in-one device that roasts, grinds and brews your coffee. The idea being that the sooner you brew the coffee after its roasted, the fresher and better it will taste.

But that freshness has a price. The Berlin is $800, requires a RFID-tagged pouch of green coffee beans to even work, and takes about 20 minutes to deliver your first cup of coffee. Update: As a commenter points out, there is an app (available via Facebook Messenger) that will let you roast any green bean. This option was not mentioned in the materials we received.

Here’s The Most Exciting New Coffee Tech Of 2017

Ready for a jolt of innovation with your morning caffeine fix? Good thing, because 2017 looks like it could serve up a double shot of disruptive coffee technology.

Due to a combination of emerging taste trends, technologies, and good timing, 2017 is shaping up to be an exciting year in the world of coffee. Here are the products that I’m most intrigued about:

Spinn Coffee

(Update: Read my November 2017 update on the status of Spinn here). Spinn Coffee is a San Francisco startup that is expected to ship its centrifugal brewing system this summer to early backers.  The Spinn coffee maker uses the same centrifugal technology that Nespresso uses in its Vertuoline coffee and espresso maker line (Nespresso licenses the technology from Spinn), only instead of creating a centrifuge within the pod, the Spinn uses its patented technology within an internal centrifuge system.

The new machine will grind whole beans for each cup and brew the consumer’s choice of espresso or drip coffee. The centrifuge spins the brewing coffee spins at a high rate within the chamber to extract flavors from the ground coffee beans.

As would be expected from a modern coffee maker, the Spinn is connected and app-controllable. The company is also working to develop a coffee marketplace that delivers beans from local roasters. While the first batch of Spinns is sold out, the company has made a second batch available for preorder that is expected to ship in the second half of this year.

Bonaverde Berlin Roast-Grind-Brew Machine

Bonaverde is one of the connected kitchen’s longest running crowdfunding sagas, having raised funding for its roast-grind-brew coffee machine back in 2013. While over two years late, the company finally started to ship to beta testers (aka Kickstarter backers) and are fine-tuning the product for a broader release.

The Bonaverde Berlin is a unique idea and will test just how far coffee lovers will go for a unique cup of coffee. While the home coffee roasting movement has picked up steam in recent years, the typical method for home roasting is to use a dedicated home roaster.  By combining roast-grind-brew into one single device, the Berlin will certainly provide extra convenience and space savings for those interested in home roasting, but it’s too soon to tell how many average consumers are willing to go this far for a unique and fresh cup of coffee.

The Berlin, which will be available to non-Kickstarter backers at the end of this year, will run for $800 or more at retail. The device requires its own special filters to mask the roasting smell as well as – at least initially – that you purchase the coffee pouches from the company that can cost between $1 and $5.  Consumers will eventually be able to insert their own beans to roast, but for now users of the Bonaverde will need to buy their green coffee through the Bonaverde curated marketplace.

Seva Coffee

In many ways, Seva is a similar concept to the Bonaverde Berlin in that it has created a roast-grind-brew machine that starts with green coffee beans and delivers a full cup of coffee, but the main difference being that Seva uses a proprietary capsule system. The capsules, which are compostable (unlike traditional Keurig based pod system), will allow the user to create a single cup of coffee, unlike the Bonaverde system which brews between 5 and 8 cups with a pouch of their coffee.

Pricing and availability for the Seva Coffee machine are currently not available.

Dash Cold Brew Coffee Machine

While companies like Toddy have enabled consumers to make cold brew coffee at home for decades, a recent surge in interest in the low-acidity coffee brewing method has some wondering if there’s a faster way to make coffee than the usual 8 to 12 hours required for a cup of cold brew.

Enter Storebound, the company behind the PancakeBot and the SoBro connected coffee table. The company showed off a prototype of its Dash Rapid Cold Brew Coffee Maker at the Housewares Show, a device that is expected to short cut the process of cold brew coffee to 10 minutes.  According to Digital Trends Jenny McGrath, the Dash Cold Brew machine uses something called ““cold boil” and lots of filtration.”

Storebound isn’t the first company to take a swing at a quick cold brew machine. First Build, the incubation group for GE that created the Paragon precision cooker, had a fast cold brew prototype called the Prisma that it came about $3 thousand short of funding on Indiegogo last fall, which caused them to put the brakes on development.

Chime Chai Tea Maker

Ok, so admittedly I’m cheating here by including a chai maker, but hey, who doesn’t like chai tea? The Chime connected tea maker, which is expected to start shipping later this year, uses a pod-based system that allows you to brew a highly optimized cup of chai.

Jacked-Up Nitro Cold Brew Keg System

Since so many us like our beer to taste like coffee, it’s only natural that we’d eventually have coffee that tastes like beer.  Or, at the very least, coffee that has a Guinness-like head in the form of nitrogen-injected coffee.

While nitro-injected coffee has been gaining in popularity in recent years, it’s still hard to find unless you live near an adventurous coffee bar. But don’t worry, you can always make nitro-coffee at home if you’re willing to try some of the early nitrogen coffee makers such as the Jacked-Up Nitro. The system, which is available online through a home brew specialty retailer, is available today for $230 and looks fairly straightforward to operate.

However, being the tech nerd that I am, I’m still on the hunt for a home nitro system that is connected and doesn’t require me to go to a home brew specialty shop. Who knows, maybe there’s an innovative startup (hint hint) that will create one that I include in my top coffee tech list of 2018.

Three Years After Kickstarter Success, Bonaverde Ships Roast-Grind-Brew Coffee Machine

Better late than never.

That’s what you’re saying if you’re a backer of Bonaverde, the startup that promised to create the world’s first consumer roast-grind-brew coffee machine. The company, which raised over $680 thousand on Kickstarter in the fall of 2013, is finally shipping its do-everything coffee machine to its Kickstarter backers in Europe according to an update on its Kickstarter page.

As with any late Kickstarter project, the backers were getting pretty restless and letting the company know about it in the community section of the Kickstarter campaign page. However, with units shipping and people already brewing, they might be quick to forgive if this comment from backer Benjamin Kober is any indication:

Hey @all,just wanted to let you know that I just brewed my first batch with my beta machine and it worked out really fine and is tasting well. The machine has a matte white/green finish and looks a lot better than in the pictures.

Even if I made a lot of critical comments and remarks about the machine throughout the last years I am really happy with the result (the coffee) although I would still love to have the other design and the ability to skip after every step. Will keep you updated as I’m testing further…

Many in the coffee world have been watching Bonaverde closely. Now that they are shipping and (very) early indications are that the product works, it will be interesting to see what the response is from the coffee heavyweights to a roast-grind-brew machine heading into the consumer market.
