Jellatech is a B2B biotech business based in Raleigh-Durham NC. We are a fast-growing team and company looking for a Head of Science.
This position will provide leadership to the organization and will play a key role as a decision maker that is able to directly influence the company’s strategy and pipeline. S/he will be pivotal in shaping the company’s pipeline by designing and managing the execution of key proof of concept experiments, which can be translated into clinical programs. This role requires deep expertise relevant to animal cell culture. The incumbent will have the ability to communicate the value of in-house scientific programs and platform technologies to various stakeholders internally and externally including key opinion leaders, scientists, investors and partners. This is a highly influential position and ideally suited for a candidate with a track record of strong leadership and an ability to critically evaluate emerging technologies to determine how the company can best leverage its current technologies and core competencies.
The Role
Responsibility
– Lead the company’s research & development program by managing the in-house programs and joint programs with research partners
– Direct the company’s strategy regarding pipeline assets by having a comprehensive understanding of the state of the art in cell culture (expertise in collagen and/or other animal proteins (ECM proteins) would be an asset)
– Mechanistic understanding of the collagen pathways
– Ability to liaise directly with scientists regarding experimental designs and ability to manage the execution of these experiments
– Proactively secure intellectual property around novel discoveries
– Represent the company to outside medical/scientific experts; present data at conferences as appropriate; prepare peer-review publications as appropriate
– Support business development efforts by reviewing technologies from potential partners and by effectively communicating the value of the company’s technology and platform to business partners
– Manage multiple projects and and people to ensure that appropriate objectives are met and that company resources are effectively utilized to meet strategic R&D goals by developing a timetable, budget and resource analysis for R&D programs and personnel administration
Requirements
– Ph.D. or equivalent degree required.
– 5-7+ years in industry designing, leading and managing R&D programs, preferably in the cell culture space
– Demonstrated understanding of the product development process
– Small company experience preferred
– Demonstrated leadership experience
– Strong scientific publication record
– Excellent communicator
– Experience generating intellectual property around inventions
– Knowledge of FDA/USDA regulations and guidelines, and applicable international regulatory requirements
– The Head of Science will be a determined executive with strong interpersonal skills, comfortably integrating into a senior-level, high profile role and able to achieve results
– Must be a detail-oriented and self-motivated strategic thinker able to drive projects forward while respecting budgets and timeline considerations
– Decisive about which projects best leverage core competencies and could be easily integrated into the company’s pipeline and overall strategy
– Efficient at designing and managing execution of experiments
– A self-motivated, approachable, articulate team player able to work in a dynamic environment
– Displays and encourages the highest level of integrity that is consistent with the organization as a whole
