We are searching for a highly motivated General Manager to join our team!
MeloMelo Kava Bar is in a high growth phase and in need of a strong people leader at our Oakland location. The position will operate with a great degree of autonomy guided by our principles of celebrating kava and caring for the people within these spaces. We are seeking not only an individual with the ability to lead and direct the work of the bar and staff, but also someone who is passionate about kava and has a strong desire to share this passion with our guests and fellow staff – and we’re happy to teach you all about it! The General Manager is responsible for ensuring the establishment is running smoothly at all times by overseeing its day-to-day operations, staff and back office administration. Their responsibility includes maintaining a safe and fun environment for customers; ensuring that staff are following procedures related to customer service, cleanliness and applicable federal, state and local regulations; payroll and bookkeeping; recruitment and employee life cycle; and support and training. The General Manager reports to the Owner, and is responsible for the management of all staff assigned to the establishment.
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma, or GED equivalent
3-5 years’ experience working in a retail, bar or restaurant environment
2 years of direct supervisory/management experience in a bar or restaurant environment
Availability to work as needed on weekends, nights, and holidays.
Duties and Responsibilities
Oversee and lead the day-to-day operations of the bar and assigned staff
Recruit, hire, train, and supervise staff
Oversee and manage payroll, scheduling and timekeeping
Ensure that industry-specific quality and safety guidelines are followed by all staff
Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local laws, regulations and municipal codes.
Create, plan, and oversee advertising and marketing efforts, including any related promotions and events
Manage customer relations and ensure customer satisfaction.
Communicate with ownership and staff to ensure operational needs are met.
Support recruiting, training, staff retention, and development initiatives.
Provide leadership, direction, and structure to team members.
Drive customer engagement within MeloMelo while developing relationships within the community.
Assist management with projects and long-term planning for future growth.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
Highly organized with excellent attention to detail.
Ability to communicate calmly and effectively to successfully defuse tense situations.
Ability to make decisions in a fast-paced, stressful environment.
Must have the physical ability to stand for long periods of time and to carry heavy items.

At MeloMelo, your base pay is one aspect of your total compensation package. This role provides a base salary range of $50,000-$65,000 before performance bonuses. MeloMelo Kava bar has sought to bring a nonalcoholic bar centered around kava, a drink from the roots of a pepper plant predominantly found in the South Pacific. Kava has a mild psychoactive effect and has been used as a ceremonial drink in the South Pacific for over 3,000 years. Our mission is simple, we are here to build a community around the love of this wonderful plant. Since our first location in Berkeley (2015) we have expanded our footprint in some of the progressive cities in the area such as Santa Cruz (2018?) and Oakland (2020).
We are looking for an experienced manager to help guide us through our growing phase and manage our Berkeley and Oakland locations, which we operate with a great degree of autonomy guided by our principles of celebrating kava and caring for the people within these spaces.
We are seeking an experienced manager with the love for kava that we share, someone who can help bring some structure and past experience to set guidelines for our future growth.
This role requires one to have:
An operational mindset to develop, execute, maintain and train procedures with staff.
An autonomous attitude with solving abstract problems.
Great communication skills between ownership and staff.
A community centric individual to cultivate spaces (events, gatherings, etc)
The desire to helping others introduce this plant drink as an alternative to other types of drinks that may be harmful.
An energetic / charismatic leader who enjoys both teaching and learning.
